LAHRA - Everyday Cultural Competence: Building Skills in Communicating Across Differences

Everyday Cultural Competence:
Building Skills in Communicating Across Differences

Introverts and Extroverts. Generations. Differences in ethnicity, language and accent, spirituality, size and physical ability. Sexual orientation and gender identity. Education and economics.

We seem to encounter more differences – of all types -- every day! Our challenge as communicators is to foster productive bonds with others, as well as communicating information. And to do all this with civilty and respect.

This participatory session begins with self-awareness.  Then we’ll explore everyday cultural competence -- increasing our effectiveness as we encounter each other and work together on behalf of our organizations.

Objectives:   We’ll focus on practical skills and approaches to effective cross cultural understanding and communication. We’ll explore ways to amplify our bridge-building techniques. And we'll set realistic action goals to keep building our skills and knowledge.

Presenter Profile:

Sue Plaster, M.Ed., is a diversity and intercultural communications consultant with more than 30 years’ experience in these disciplines. She helps organizations with diversity, leadership development and succession planning, and advises individual clients on job search and transition. Sue has a specialty in leadership succession and workforce planning that takes diversity and equity into account.
