    CMSHRM - Achieving Work Life Balance - Stress & Resiliency by Jody Bertram

    Numerous studies have shown that job stress is by far the major source of stress for American adults and has escalated progressively over the past few decades.  Add the typical stressors of managing relationships, families and home-related responsibilities and it is no wonder that unmanaged stress and lack of work/life balance has a negative impact.  Stress comes in many forms and can affect emotional, cognitive and physical abilities.  This session will focus on ways to more effectively address stress and improve resiliency, identify and overcome roadblocks to effectively managing stress, and provide solutions for achieving better work/life balance.

    Course Objectives:

    • Increase self-awareness
    • Identify effects of stress - Emotional, Cognitive (Self-Talk) and Physical
    • Set goals and develop skills

    Speaker Information:

    Jody is a private consultant offering confidential, compassionate consulting, coaching & support services.  She has over ten years of experience in working with adolescents, adults and families, in both individual and group settings, with a focus on managing  financial-, anger-, disability- and stress-related issues.  Jody also has expertise in the areas of building self-esteem, conflict resolution, grief and loss issues and depression, as well as life transitions.  She has extensive experience working with individuals with disabilities and mental health issues.

    Jody is educated in the areas of rehabilitation and psychological services. Jody has developed the professional understanding, knowledge, attitude, and skill needed to assist individuals and groups with disabilities in achieving their maximum level of independence and functioning. Jody provides a balance between technical rehabilitation knowledge and basic counseling competency. Jody has an MS degree in Vocational Rehabilitation Counseling from St. Cloud State University and is also a Certified Rehabilitation Counselor.

      This presentation focuses on how to reduce time to proficiency using the Learning Paths methodology based on the research in the Learning Paths book (Wiley and ASTD Press 2004) by Steve Rosenbaum.

      The Learning Paths methodology has been applied with more than 400 different functions in 8 different countries with a 30 to 50% reduction in time to proficiency. Getting employees up-to-speed quickly is a key issue for most HR professsionals.

      Steve Rosenbaum - For more than 30 years, he has lead successful Learning Paths initiatives for major corporations in manufacturing, sales, healthcare, customer service, finance, and leadership. He has developed and trained a network of Learning Path consultants and partners in the U.S. And internationally.       Winona Area SHRM - Minnesota Unemployment Insurance Employer Discussion

      Attendees will learn about best practices to manage UI issues in their workplace and gain the knowledge about employer rights and responsibilities under UI law. The session is appropriate for business professionls who are new to UI issues as well as those who'd like to discuss specific UI topics in more detail.

      We will cover:

      • How Unemployment Insurance (UI) tax rates are determined
      • How an applicant's benefits eligibility can affect UI tax rates for their former employers
      • What employers can do to prevent unnecessary charges to their UI account
      • Tips to avoid the most common UI mistakes
      • Information on properly classifying a worker as an independent contractor versus an employee
      • Tips on wage detail reporting

      In addition to providing information, we really want to get feedback from attendees and hear what issues and concerns they have regarding the UI program.

      Speakers for this session will be:

      Aaron Tell

      Aaron is a Communications/Outreach Specalist with the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development - Unempployment Insurance (UI) Program - for 19 years. Responsibilities include providing education and trianing to employers, people applying to receieve unemployment benefits, and UI staff. Duties also include gathering feedback from UI customers in user-testing sessions and then applying that information along with user-centered design principles to the Self-Service System, correspondence, and the UI website for a better user experience.

      Lynne Batzli

      Lynne is an Outreach Specialist with the Department of Economic Development (DEED)'s Unemployment Insurance Division, working primarily with the employer community. In her over 25 years with the Department, Lynne has held a variety of roles. She worked for four years as a Reemployment Assistance Specalist, hosting classes to help unemployed workers find good jobs. For 20 years prior to that, Lynne served as DEED's Legislative Director, acting as a liaison between the DEED, The Legislature, the Governor's Office, other State Departments, lobbyists, businesses and Minnesota citizens.

      This course will cover an overview of the financial statements and the role of accounting in business.  It will then discuss the key financial metrics that affect a firm’s valuation and how the HR function plays into company value.

      Speaker Information:

      Helen found a passion for finance during her 5-year stint with the U.S. Army.  Post-Army, she earned her undergraduate and graduate degrees in Finance.  She spent several years in the banking industry, working her way up from Credit Analyst to CFO.

      She began teaching part-time during her career in banking and began teaching full-time in 2004.  She has been teaching at the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota for ten years, and is heavily involved in the MBA Program.  Her passion for finance, investing and real estate fuel her energy in class.

      Employers face a challenging world in which they must maintain a workplace free from sex-based harassment and bullying, particularly given that employers can be held responsible for harassing behavior by employees at all levels and by non-employees, such as customers.  This session will address how to minimize the risk of harassment and bullying by establishing sound policies and consistently enforcing them with all employees, including executives.  The presentation will also discuss how to respond if an employee claims that harassment has occurred or if the employer becomes aware of harassment, even if no complaint is made.  Finally, the presentation will cover the public relations implications of harassment allegations and the associated response by companies and their boards, as well as the necessity of having a plan when crises arise.

      LAHRA - Examining an Employer’s Legal Duty to Accommodate Based on Religious Beliefs and Practices

      Religious discrimination claims are on the rise, and Minnesota’s increasingly diverse population presents new challenges for employers who must balance legal compliance against business efficiency.  This session will examine the current legal landscape around an employer’s duty to accommodate employees’ religious beliefs and practices, including what constitutes religious discrimination and practical recommendations for religious accommodations in the workplace. 

      Kerry Middleton has extensive litigation experience in federal and state courts nationwide. He has successfully represented employers in virtually every type of employment claim including: discrimination, harassment, whistleblower, retaliation, breach of contract, workplace torts, non-compete agreements, trade secret disputes, and wage and hour litigation. Kerry has  defended his clients in administrative proceedings before the EEOC, the DOL, and state and local human rights agencies. He also provides advice and training to help employers avoid litigation. Kerry has published and lectured on a variety of employment law topics and has been recognized as one of the “Top 40 Minnesota Employment Litigators.”

      HR Round Table brings business professionals together. We discuss current or emerging human resource and business topics. We learn from each other and form networks.
